Day One Commentary This commentary is a study reflection on Genesis 1:1–5. It is not Scripture and is intentionally displayed separately from the biblical text loaded through the Free Use Bible API.
God is present before anything takes form. Genesis begins with God, not with an explanation of God. The darkness and the deep are not rivals to Him. They are the unformed setting over which His Spirit moves and His command brings order.
The hovering Spirit communicates presence, purpose, and readiness. The abstract presence in this experience is a visual interpretation of Genesis 1:2. It avoids giving God a human form and instead emphasizes that creation begins under divine attention.
Light appears because God speaks. “Let there be light” presents creation as responsive to divine authority. The light of Day One precedes the sun, moon, and stars described later in Genesis, placing the source and meaning of light in God’s command rather than in a created object.
God distinguishes and names. Separating light from darkness and naming Day and Night establishes boundaries, rhythm, and intelligibility. Creation is not merely made; it is ordered.
The first day establishes the pattern for what follows. God speaks, creation responds, God evaluates, and order emerges. The movement from void to distinction becomes the foundation of the Genesis creation account.

Scientific context—not additional Scripture. Modern cosmology describes the universe through the hot Big Bang model. This model developed from Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, Alexander Friedmann’s expanding-universe equations, Georges Lemaître’s proposal of an expanding primordial universe, and Edwin Hubble’s observations that distant galaxies are receding.
According to this model, the observable universe developed approximately
13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot and dense early state.
The Big Bang was not an explosion of matter from one point into preexisting empty
space. Instead, space itself expanded while the universe cooled
and its matter and radiation evolved.
Major evidence for the Big Bang model includes the continuing expansion of the
universe, the observed abundance of light elements, and the
cosmic microwave background radiation.
The Singularity and the Limits of Physics
When Einstein’s equations are extended backward in time, they approach an initial
boundary commonly called the Big Bang singularity.
The singularity theorems developed by physicists
Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking showed that,
under certain physical conditions, general relativity predicts that the universe’s
past cannot be extended indefinitely.
However, a singularity does not necessarily describe a physical point that science
has directly observed. It may instead indicate that general relativity has reached
the limit of its usefulness. Scientists do not yet possess a complete,
experimentally confirmed theory of quantum gravity capable of
describing the universe’s earliest instant.
Genesis does not present equations or identify a physical mechanism for the origin
of space, time, matter, or light. Its theological declaration is that creation exists
because God commanded it. The words “In the beginning” identify
creation as having an origin, while “Let there be light” presents
light as dependent upon the will of the Creator.
Light Before the Sun
In modern physics, light is a form of
electromagnetic radiation. The early universe contained intense
radiation long before the Sun existed.
During the universe’s earliest stages, photons repeatedly interacted with free
electrons, making the universe hot and opaque. Approximately
380,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe cooled enough for
electrons and atomic nuclei to combine. Photons could then travel more freely
through space.
That ancient radiation is now detected as the
cosmic microwave background, commonly called the
CMB. It is the oldest electromagnetic light that scientists can
directly observe.
The CMB was predicted by physicists Ralph Alpher and
Robert Herman, accidentally discovered in 1965 by
Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, and later measured
with increasing precision by the COBE, WMAP, and
Planck space missions.
The first stars formed much later, and the Sun did not form until approximately
4.6 billion years ago. Modern cosmology therefore recognizes that
electromagnetic radiation existed long before the Sun.
The Penrose Low-Entropy Problem
The early universe also presents what physicists call the
low-entropy problem. Although the universe was extremely hot, its
gravitational field was remarkably smooth and ordered.
Small variations in density, later measured in the cosmic microwave background,
eventually developed through gravity into stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies.
Mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose argued that the early
universe occupied an extraordinarily special gravitational state. Using
phase-space and black-hole entropy considerations, Penrose estimated the required
precision as approximately:

This can be read as:
one chance in ten raised to the power of ten raised to the power of 123
.
This is not merely 10 raised to the 123rd power. The exponent is itself
10 raised to the 123rd power. The number is so large that it cannot be written
out in full using any physically practical amount of space.
Penrose did not present this as a measured probability that the Big Bang
occurred, nor as a calculation of the probability that God exists. It represents
his estimate of how exceptionally small the range of initial gravitational
conditions compatible with a universe like ours may have been.
In simple terms, the early universe was not merely energetic. It began in a highly
constrained state of gravitational order.
Scientists continue to debate whether this order should be explained through a
deeper physical law, cosmic inflation, a multiverse, a quantum boundary condition,
or a theory that has not yet been discovered.
Quantum Cosmology and the No-Boundary Proposal
Quantum cosmology attempts to apply quantum mechanics to the
universe as a whole.
In 1983, physicists James Hartle and
Stephen Hawking introduced the
Hartle–Hawking no-boundary proposal. Their model suggests that,
near the universe’s earliest state, ordinary time may have behaved more like a
spatial dimension.
Under this proposal, the universe would not necessarily begin at a sharp temporal
edge or with a single instantaneous starting spark. Instead, ordinary time may have
emerged gradually from an earlier quantum state.
The Hartle–Hawking proposal remains a theoretical hypothesis rather than an
established description of the universe’s origin.
Other proposed models include
Alexander Vilenkin’s quantum-tunneling proposal,
loop quantum cosmology, inflationary models, and
bouncing-universe models. These approaches remain subjects of scientific debate.
None of these models demonstrates that the universe emerged from absolute
philosophical nothingness. They begin with mathematical laws, quantum states,
fields, geometries, or boundary conditions. They attempt to describe how an early
universe might behave, but they do not settle why physical reality or its governing
laws exist.
Science, Scripture, and the Cinematic Experience
This science component does not claim that Genesis is a modern physics textbook or that current cosmological theories prove the biblical account. Instead, it identifies points at which modern observations are compatible with the Genesis sequence: the universe has an early history, radiation existed before the Sun, and the cosmos began in an exceptionally ordered physical state.
Genesis addresses the ultimate source, authority, and meaning of creation. Cosmology investigates the physical development of the universe. Where science describes expansion, radiation, entropy, and quantum models, Genesis declares that the universe exists because God created and ordered it.
The ocean, mist, hovering movement, and transition from darkness into light in this
experience are artistic interpretations. They are not claims that Genesis supplies
those physical details.
The cinematic imagery is designed to help viewers meditate on the central
theological message of the passage:
the universe is not self-existent, and light appears at the command of God.
Living the Scripture
Practical application of Genesis 1:1–5.
Practical Application
God can bring light into every dark or uncertain place. Genesis begins with a world that is unformed, empty, and covered in darkness, yet God is already present. The passage reminds us that confusion, grief, fear, and uncertainty are never beyond His reach.
God brings change through His Word. When He speaks, light appears, boundaries are established, and order begins. In the same way, we can invite Scripture to guide our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and responses instead of allowing darkness or disorder to define us.
God also calls the light good. His work may begin before we understand the entire plan. We can trust Him while the process is still unfolding and choose to reflect His light through truth, compassion, patience, and faithful action.
